I was at Gray Station Middle School in Jones County for my middle school placement this semester. I knew from the very first day that middle school was where I belonged. While I was there, I taught 7th grade math and also participated in numerous different professional development meetings. I was faced with many challenges while I was at Gray Station Middle School. It was my very first time teaching real students so my confidence was not very high to begin with, but by the end of my six weeks there, I was ready to get up in front of any class and teach them all about inequalities and expressions. I got very lucky with the group of students that I had the opportunity to teach. My first period class was an honors class and my second period class was a remedial academic support class. I loved the challenge of figuring out which strategies to use in order to challenge and engage the honors class. However, the real challenge came with figuring out which strategies to use in the academic support class. It was difficult to come up with strategies that engaged them and motivated them because they were so used to only using online resources to learn in that class, which was actually not effective at all. By the end of my time at Gray Station, I did figure out that the academic support class learned best when they could collaborate as well as when they could compete against each other. Competition is actually something that worked for the honors class as well.
